About IYIL @ UNT | International Year of Indigenous Languages

About IYIL @ UNT

The United Nations has designated 2019 the International Year of Indigenous Languages to bring attention to issues of language loss and language revitalization. UNT is a registered partner on this initiative.

UNT is taking the lead among Texas universities in recognizing the International Year of Indigenous Languages. In Fall 2019, UNT presents a series of events to celebrate indigenous languages and raise awareness concerning the challenges they face due to globalization, modernization, and the legacies of colonialism.

This event series represents a collaboration among a remarkable number of participating groups, revealing broad recognition of the importance of these issues. Sponsors and partners within UNT include the Office of the President, 3 colleges, 8 departments, 4 other administrative units, and 4 student organizations. We have also partnered with 6 outside organizations. Such broad collaborations are not common.
